This blog is a way of sharing the information and resources that have helped me to recover my son Roo from an Autism Spectrum Disorder. What I have learned is to view our symptoms as the results of underlying biological cause, which can be identified and healed. I say "our symptoms" because I also have a neuro-immune disorder called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

And, of course, I am not a doctor (although I have been known to impersonate one while doing imaginative play with my son)- this is just our story and information that has been helpful or interesting to us. I hope it is helpful and interesting to you!

Where to Order Biomed Supplements and Supplies

The Autism Community Store:
This site is new and seems like the most comprehensive one.  They sell supplements and paraphernalia  (pill cutters, pill storage boxes, etc) as well as special diet items and therapy items.

There are several supplement companies that specialize in meeting the needs of people on the spectrum.  These include:

OurKidsASD is a website that is affiliated with Lee Silsby compounding pharmacy, a specialist in compounding medications for kids with special needs.

PureBulk
This site sells many of the supplements that we need in bulk powder form for much less than the same ones cost elsewhere.  They also sell useful tools such as encapsulation machines, empty capsules, very accurate digital scales, and measuring spoons for very small amounts.

Mountain Rose Herbs
This site has an extensive selection of herbs and spices that are very high quality and ethically sourced.  They also sell ingredients and supplies needed to make your own safe personal care products such as lotions and soap, packaging options, empty capsules, and items for making tea.

Lifetrients
This company makes a product called SPEAK that was extremely powerful for helping Roo.

NeuroBiologix
This company has some very useful formulations of supplements for the specific issues common in autism families.

Kirkman:
Kirkman products are often less expensive, but are not generally considered the highest quality.  Aside from their line of hypoallergenic supplements (which seem to be clean of contamination and undesirable additives), many of their products contain artificial colors, sweeteners, etc that aren't good for our kids.  They also have a line of cleaning products for people with chemical sensitivities and sell some special foods for the GF/CF diet.

VitaCost
Is a large online retailer focusing on health foods and supplements.  They have a huge selection, tend to have low prices, and seem to be having a sale most of the time.  Be very careful to read the ingredients on their products- many have fillers, etc that are problematic.

New Beginnings Nutritionals:
Their products are free of gluten, casein, soy, corn and yeast.  They have a guide on their site with suggestions for getting kids to take supplements.

BrainChild Nutritionals:
We used their liquid multivitamin and mineral products for close to a year and really liked them (we had to stop using them when we went on the SCD).  They have a range of vitamins and minerals in different combinations and doses so that you can get a relatively customized product.  They also produce a number of herbal tinctures for immune support and yeast control and have a protocol that they sell for fighting yeast as well as for heavy metal detoxification.  They have a yahoo list and give very good customer support.

For enzymes, there are two main sources:

Houston Enzymes:
We used these for several years, until Roo no longer needed them.  They are affordable, especially if purchased in the large tubs in powder form.

Enzymedica:
Enzymedica makes therapeutic enzymes in addition to digestive ones.  They have an anti-viral enzyme called ViraStop that we have used extensively and love.  Not only can it be used to fight serious chronic viruses, but it is also effective at minimizing and even preventing all those colds and flues that go around between kids.  We are also using their EFA Optimize product to help Roo's body absorb the EFAs we give him better since these seem to be so important for him.
